Why This Work Matters
Doug Jacobs is an experienced California attorney who advocates for property owners and families navigating some of the most stressful moments of their lives: when a property no longer feels safe, a construction project has gone wrong, or a child is not receiving the educational services they need.
Doug’s professional path began in the classroom. After moving to California in the mid-1990s, he spent six years as a public school teacher and band director while his wife taught Spanish. Those years left a lasting impression. He saw firsthand how hard educators work, how rigid systems can become, and how easily students and families can be lost in bureaucracy. Wanting the ability to create change beyond the limits of the classroom, Doug made the decision to attend law school.
After graduating from California Western School of Law, Doug began his legal career representing parents in special education matters. As a young attorney, he observed IEP meetings, participated in due process hearings, and helped families advocate for services their children were entitled to under federal and state law. That early work laid the foundation for his understanding of education law, though at the time he did not yet realize how personal that knowledge would later become.
Doug’s practice then expanded into construction defect and civil litigation, where he spent nearly two decades working inside the insurance defense system. He represented developers, general contractors, and subcontractors in disputes ranging from modest residential claims to complex, multi-million-dollar cases involving hundreds of homes. Over time, he became increasingly troubled by what he saw: valid homeowner claims minimized or denied due to technical defenses, insurance coverage disputes, or compliance gaps while families bore the cost of construction failures they did not cause. Watching outcomes turn on insurance funding rather than fairness convinced Doug that the system was deeply flawed.
Years later, Doug’s early experience in special education advocacy collided with his personal life when his own son was diagnosed with autism. Over more than a decade, Doug and his wife navigated multiple school districts, endless meetings, and a full range of placements and services. Sitting on the other side of the table as a parent fundamentally changed his perspective. The legal rules he once studied became real-world consequences, shaping a child’s daily life and a family’s future.
That combination of professional experience and lived reality now defines Doug’s practice. He represents homeowners who expected workmanlike construction and instead face defects, delays, and costly repairs ranging from small remodels to multi-million-dollar custom homes and larger developments. He also helps families navigate special education systems by reviewing evaluations, IEPs, and 504 plans, preparing parents for meetings, and advocating when schools are not listening.
Doug Founded His Practice on a Simple Belief:
Families deserve an advocate who understands both the law and the human cost of getting it wrong. His goal is not conflict for its own sake, but thoughtful, strategic advocacy that helps clients move from uncertainty toward a clear and realistic path forward.

A Human First Approach
Doug’s decision to leave the confines of long-term insurance defense work and build his own firm came from a simple realization: he wanted to spend the rest of his career doing something that mattered. He knows the mechanics of civil litigation and the inner workings of insurance carriers, contractors, and school districts. He also knows what it feels like to be the parent or homeowner on the other side of the table.
His approach is to start by listening to what is actually keeping a client up at night, to explain options in plain English with honest tradeoffs, and to match strategy to each client’s tolerance for cost, time, and conflict. Every matter is handled with transparent communication, practical budgeting, and a commitment to rebuilding trust where it has been broken, whether in brick or in bureaucracy.
Behind every file he sees a real family with a home or a child that needs a champion, not just a case number.
Message From Doug
I spent years inside a system where technicalities and insurance coverage often mattered more than the people whose lives were being upended. It left me with a bad taste and a clear conviction that we can do better.
As a litigator, a former teacher, and a parent of a child with significant special needs, I know how overwhelming these systems can feel when you are on the outside looking in. You should not have to learn a new language just to be heard.
My mission with this firm is to turn the experience I have gained on the inside into accessible advocacy on the outside. Through honesty, strategic planning, and compassionate guidance, I want every client who walks through my door to feel that they are no longer facing this alone.
